Penguin Books; Alice in Wonderland
My interpretation of the timeless tale of Alice in Wonderland, designed a few months ago now but I'm re-visiting it for submission on Friday.. This particular version won't be going forward after a number of concerns were brought to my attention during the initial crit.. However I will be retaining much of the design, experimenting with paper stock and colour to give it a bit more of a playful feel.. Watch this space.
Design Rationale;
This solution incorporates a clean, functional style whilst retaining a meaningful message, the visual focal point of the book cover is an interpretation of a ‘portal’ into another dimension.
The abstract ‘W’ symbol within the centre of the portal represents both the concept of wonderland and emphasises the ‘upside-down’ nature of the goings on within wonderland, working both as a letter form and a visual metaphor for ‘place’.
The cover aims to satisfy a broad audience, an inquisitive young audience as well as a more mature demographic that are perhaps re-visiting the novel.
One of the covers greatest strengths is its individuality, unlike many mass produced novels it does not contain photographic imagery or illustration - tailoring it to a much wider audience.
To summarise, the outcome demonstrates an original yet legible response to the brief that incorporates both innovative and original ideas, executed clinically.
