Today I attended a D&AD lecture and portfolio surgery session, during which I met with four fantastic members of the design community from both Cardiff and London.
The lecture outlined the history and brand values of the D&AD, highlighting some of the excellent work they have chosen over their long reign as one of the most reputable design awards around. We then heard from Emma Booty, a practicing graphic designer with a wealth of experience in a multitude of countries - Emma discussed approaching a brief, and the assesment criteria that each item of student work is critiqued to. The lecture was one of the most interesting I have ever attended, a very inspiring talk that left me looking forward to getting stuck into the D&AD briefs later this year!
To end the session, a selection of students were given the oppourtunity to meet with graphic designers, advertising executives and account managers and review their portfolios and discuss their eventual career progression. This excercise was invaluable as it gave me a chance to discuss my work with potential employers. Initially daunted by the thought of my work being criticised by some of the best, I left confident in my work - assured by the fact each designer I saw was impressed by my portfolio.
An example of work (appropriately for D&AD) by A+B Studio, a member of which I spoke with at the portfolio surgery this afternoon, check them out here.
