content management, product design & reflection

Another work experience related post. Having spent the start of the week on various touch ups and small print jobs, I have been given the task of designing a web-based content management system for the financial company ‘principality.’

With not much specific ‘experience’ in the field, I began to recall instances of good navigation and web design almost without thinking. The most recent example of information design in my work has to be the ‘castrol’ brief I completed with housemate and fellow Cardiff School of Art & Design student Andy Penny. This instantly threw up a mix of optimistic and pessimistic memories.

Myself and Andy, both self confessed print designers with an eye for a decent layout took on a product design brief and were instantly intimidated by the ‘product’ part. So, initially we disregarded that aspect entirely, and it helped us stay focused on developing a quality visual system that really worked.

Comparatively, these two briefs look worlds apart on paper, but my new found consideration for brand image and visual consistency through wide application were a great asset when drawing up some rough visuals for a multi layered content management system.

Another string to the ‘design bow’ thanks to my generous work experience opportunity. Theres been a few days here where I’ve learnt more before lunchtime than I have in a four week university module.

I’ll post some visuals when the week is up.
